Dr Bevan Morris, Prime Minister of
Maharishi's Global Country of World Peace
‘The greatest achievement of Maharishi was the attainment of the state of supreme enlightenment—Unity Consciousness—as a young man at the feet of his spiritual Master, His Divinity Brahmanand Saraswati, Jagatguru Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math. [Dr Morris explained that this pinnacle of human experience is the seventh and highest state of human consciousness.]
‘In this state, Maharishi was living the reality, “I am the Unified Field, I am the Totality of everything,” experiencing life as the ocean of bliss, and everything in the universe in terms of unity with the reality of his own Self.
‘In that unbounded and liberated state. his every impulse of life was for the benefit of every human being on earth, all of whom were as near and dear to him as the most intimate member of his own family. This was the status of the great saint of the Vedic Tradition.
‘Instead of living a recluse life, Maharishi was spontaneously impelled to teach what he had learnt from his Master, Shri Guru Dev, His Divinity Brahmanand Saraswati; and became a Maharishi, a great sage or seer. Someone with that title is not only the seer of the unified reality of everything, experiencing that level on the basis of which anything could be known, but for fifty-three years he was also the extremely skilled teacher of that Reality, so that other people also should have that experience.
‘When Maharishi began to teach in 1955, the common understanding throughout India and the world was that to meditate was a very difficult thing, that it required such feats of concentration that it was only practical for recluses who had withdrawn from life, and a result was produced only after decades of diligent trying.
‘In a single stroke, Maharishi reversed all of this wrong understanding about meditation and brought out the principle of Transcendental Meditation. . . . Maharishi gave immediate, instant experience to the world—that to transcend, to come to the state of transcendental silence, which is one's own Self, the state of pure bliss consciousness within—to experience that is not difficult. It is simple. It is the birthright of every human being in the world—even a ten-year-old child—to have that experience, and it is easy to attain.
‘This single achievement alone was enough to transform the whole nature of human life on earth. Maharishi, by virtue of introducing to the world again these simple mechanics of Transcendental Meditation, gave an open gate to enlightenment to anybody in the world who would like to obtain it.
‘Maharishi went on to unfold seven advanced techniques of Transcen-dental Meditation, and then some twenty years later he began teaching another very powerful programme from the Vedic Tradition's Patanjali Yog-Sutra, which he entitled the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme.
‘This is a set of techniques that allows the individual, having gained Transcendental Consciousness—the silent, self-referral bliss conscious- ness within—to begin to think or function from that level, to actually live at that level—functioning and operating in that Unified Field level, the unbounded consciousness of their own Self.
‘With these techniques, and particularly the most powerful of all called “Yogic Flying”, Maharishi gave a great, powerful fertilizer to accelerate human life towards the state of enlightenment.
‘With all the experiences that came out even from the first days of his teaching, Maharishi was able to distinctively define seven states of human consciousness for the world—the regular three: waking, sleeping and dreaming and four higher states: Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, and Unity Consciousness.
‘Maharishi said, “Another level is, do these techniques together in a group. If you do it in a group, the power will be even much more. It will be the n-squared effect: ten people doing it together is like ten squared or one hundred people doing it alone”.
‘The power of group practice also leads to great effects on the whole society and the whole nation, because Maharishi, in doing all of this from the very beginning, had not only the goal of enlightenment of the individual in mind. As he said when he began his whole world organ-ization on the 1st of January, 1958, his goal was to spiritually regenerate the whole world.
‘The short cut to this he found in groups practising these advanced techniques including Yogic Flying together—not a difficult thing, but a joyful thing. It's wonderful to practise these techniques in groups. And now Maharishi has organised worldwide such groups to create waves of coherence that will make the national consciousness of any nation integrated and invincible in their character.
Maharishi, from his level of Unity Consciousness*, extended the level of intellectual understanding of the Veda and Vedic Literature of India, which are not some philosophy or religion, as the invaders of India had claimed, but a science of consciousness. Maharishi explained that actually the sounds of the Veda are the reverberations of the Unified Field itself. It interacts with itself, it knows itself, and it begins to flow in itself, to vibrate as sound.
‘These sounds have been cognised by the Vedic Rishis through the countless millennia of the Vedic Tradition. So the sounds of the Veda are the sounds of Natural Law itself in their unified state—as Maharishi defined it, the “Constitution of the Universe”, the total field of the Laws of Nature that administers the ever-expanding universe.
‘Like this Maharishi unfolded countless insights into the reality of Veda as the science of the completeness of Natural Law. This unfoldment of the complete vision of Veda and Vedic Literature as the Constitution of the Universe was something unknown for many long centuries in India.
‘Further, Maharishi used simple expressions to define what reality, what the Veda is: like Aham Brahmasmi—“I am the Totality”; like Yogastah Kuru Karmani—“Established in the state of Yoga, the Unified Field, perform action”; like Sarvam Khalvidam Brahm—“That all this in creation, every single thing, is that field of Unity, the field of Totality.”
‘Maharishi taught with other expressions, including the Bhagavad-Gita, which showed everyone the experience of the reality of everything according to the Vedic Rishis of the long history of India. He made clear the reality of this, not by trying to explain the meaning of each word, but by virtue first of the sound quality of the Vedic Sounds as the flow of the Natural Law guiding the evolution of the universe.
‘Another great change that Maharishi brought about was to use scientific research to take the Vedic science of consciousness out of what Maharishi called the garb of mysticism to the practical level of direct experience, scientific understanding, and scientific research. In 1962 for example, Maharishi was visiting a particle accelerator outside Rome and talking to the physicists about the unity of all Laws of Nature.
‘That dream of Albert Einstein, which has been fulfilled through the work of great quantum physicists including Dr John Hagelin, now provides a clear theoretical understanding in terms of modern science of all that the Vedic Rishis experienced in the laboratory of their own con-sciousness throughout all these ages.
‘Now more than 600 scientific research studies from 250 different universities and research institutes in 33 countries are collected in seven volumes of collected papers, documenting the practical results of Maharishi’s programmes throughout the world. Over 5,000 pages of research have been published in over 100 different scientific journals and funded extensively by the National Institutes of Health of the United States Government.
‘Maharishi also right from the beginning wanted to expose the results of all these practices he was introducing for the development of enlight-enment, a completely enlightened human race, and an invincible family of nations living in permanent peace.
‘Another of Maharishi's great achievements concerned the tradition of the Vedic families of India. The tradition of Vedic recitation in India had been fading out under the influence of western culture; and Maharishi stepped in with great power to support the livelihood of the Vedic Pandits of India, and to revive fully their tradition of Vedic recitations for peace and the elimination of problems in the world.
‘He revived for the Vedic Pandits the importance that they recite the Veda from the level of silence by being Yogic Flyers themselves. He reminded them of their ability to use the Vedic Sounds, called Vedic Yagyas or Graha Shanti, to prevent specific dangers that might befall any country in the world.
‘Now these Vedic performances are being performed from the holy central spot, the Brahmasthan of India. Maharishi revived this whole tradition of the Vedic recitations and invocations to take care of the des-tiny of any individual, and of the world as a whole, through looking after the destiny of each individual nation.
‘Maharishi also emphasized the science of Jyotish and Yagya, the Vedic system of prediction of the future of anyone based upon their birth time, and then having detected any danger coming, to fulfill the Vedic saying: Heyam dukham anagatam—“Avert the danger that has not yet come”—through the Vedic Pandits’ powerful Yagya performances.
‘In Maharishi's final messages in the last weeks, he described the “dawn in the world of administration through silence”. The Unified Field that is the source and administrator of everything, from the human physiol-ogy to the whole galactic universe, is a field of just pure silence vibrating with dynamism within all the Laws of Nature.
‘And Maharishi has brought out in this world the teachings of the Vedic Tradition: that it is possible—and it has happened many times in the ancient past in the world—that the whole world could enjoy the benefit of that silent administration which administers the evolution of the whole galactic creation—that incredible power that can run galaxies and universes—to support the spontaneous fulfilment of the desire of any human being. And any nation could be completely free of all problems and suffering in its national administration through the national law being fully supported by the administration by Natural Law of the whole universe.’
Jai Guru Dev
* Maharishi explains that beyond the familiar states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping are four higher states of consciousness—Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, and Unity Consciousness—each bringing a new dimension of experience, knowledge, and fulfilment.
